Experiment

Read to the class the top part of the paper, "For purposes of this examination, a song consists of melody, harmony, and rhythm. Melody is defined as a single line of notes heard in succession as a coherent unit. Harmony is the sound created by multiple pitches playing together. Rhythm is the ordering of music through time."

Have them familiarize themselves with the questions on the paper. Explain that you will be playing them two songs that they will be comparing. You will play each song twice: Song 1, then Song 2, then Song 1, then Song 2.

If there is a projector, make sure the projector is on off or mute so the class cannot see the video.

Tell them that you are playing them Song 1, then play them: 


Tell them that you are playing Song 2 then play them:




Tell them that you are playing Song 1 for the second time then play them the first video (steel drums).

Tell them that you are playing Song 2 for the second time then play them the second video.

Give them time to fill out the rest of the sheet.


PART II

Instruct them that they will be doing the same thing with Song 3 and Song 4.

Play them Song 4


Tell them that you are playing Song 3 for the second time then play them the first video (steel drums).

Tell them that you are playing Song 4 for the second time then play them the second video.

Give them time to fill out the rest of the sheet.

Collect the sheets.
